Stamping press with a die closing on a metal part

Metal stamping in brief

Metal stamping cuts and forms sheet metal between a punch and a die mounted in a press. It is the right choice when the design is stable and the volume, typically tens of thousands of parts per year or more, can amortize dedicated tooling. The buyer must specify the drawing and tolerances, material grade and thickness, annual and lot quantities, tooling ownership, quality documents and packaging.

Syzygy Industrial Hub (SyzygyHub) connects manufacturing buyers with validated metal stamping suppliers in Canada. The buyer uploads drawings and a request for quotation. Y Brain, the platform's artificial intelligence, routes the request to suppliers whose processes, certifications and location match.

Metal stamping dies and tolerances

Typical process values. Actual capacity varies by shop and must be confirmed with the supplier.

  • As an indicative rule, a progressive die is justified from tens of thousands of parts per year, while laser cutting or CNC punching with press-brake forming stays more economical for prototypes and a few thousand parts.
  • For parts under 300 mm (12 in) in sheet up to 3 mm (1/8 in), typical stamping tolerances are ±0.05 to ±0.13 mm (±0.002 to ±0.005 in) between holes pierced in the same station, ±0.25 to ±0.50 mm (±0.010 to ±0.020 in) across one bend and ±1° on bend angles.
  • A safe default inside bend radius is 1 material thickness in low-carbon steel, and typically 1.5 to 3 thicknesses in HSLA steel and 6061-T6 aluminum.
  • A maximum burr height of 10% of material thickness is a common drawing requirement for stamped edges.
  • Cutting force equals cut perimeter × thickness × shear strength: a 300 mm perimeter in 2 mm low-carbon steel (about 345 MPa) needs about 207 kN (23 US tons).

How to get metal stamping quotes

01

Submit your request for quotation

Upload your drawings and files, then state the material, quantities, tolerances and required date.

02

Receive targeted quotes

Y Brain routes your request to validated metal stamping suppliers whose processes, certifications and location match.

03

Choose your supplier

Compare the quotes received on the same scope and start with the supplier that suits you.

What to include in your request for quotation

A complete request lets suppliers price the same scope, without assumptions.

  • Drawing and 3D model at the current revision, with tolerances and critical characteristics.

  • Material: standard, grade, temper, coating, and thickness in millimetres or decimal inches rather than gauge.

  • Quantities and schedule: annual volume, lot size, program life, sample and production start dates.

  • Tooling: production or soft, ownership, die life, maintenance.

  • Edges and secondary operations: burr side and height, deburring, finishes with specifications.

  • Quality: certification, PPAP level or first article report, capability targets, material certificates.

  • Packaging and delivery: bulk or layered, corrosion protection, labelling, destination.

Frequently asked questions about metal stamping

How do I get metal stamping quotes with SyzygyHub?

You upload your drawings and your request for quotation once. Y Brain, the platform's artificial intelligence, routes the request to validated metal stamping suppliers whose processes, certifications and location match. Access to drawings is covered by a non-disclosure agreement. You then compare the quotes received and choose your supplier.

When is metal stamping more economical than laser cutting?

Metal stamping becomes more economical than laser cutting once the lower price per part has repaid the cost of the die. The break-even quantity equals the tooling cost divided by the difference in piece price between the two processes, calculated over the life of the program. As an indicative rule, stamping pays off from tens of thousands of parts per year, while laser cutting with press-brake forming remains cheaper for prototypes, low volumes and designs that are still changing.

Who owns the stamping die, the buyer or the supplier?

The buyer normally owns the stamping die when the buyer pays for it, and the supplier stores and maintains it. This should be written into the purchase order or tooling agreement, together with the guaranteed die life in strokes, who pays for sharpening and wear parts, how rebuilds and engineering changes are quoted, and the conditions for transferring the die and its design files to another supplier.

What tolerances can metal stamping hold?

Metal stamping typically holds ±0.05 to ±0.13 mm (±0.002 to ±0.005 in) between holes pierced in the same station and ±0.10 to ±0.25 mm (±0.004 to ±0.010 in) on a blanked outline, for small parts in sheet up to 3 mm (1/8 in) thick. Dimensions across a bend are typically ±0.25 to ±0.50 mm, and bend angles ±1°. These values are indicative and must be confirmed with the supplier.

What certifications should a metal stamping supplier have?

ISO 9001 is the usual baseline for a metal stamping supplier, and IATF 16949:2016 is expected for automotive production parts. Both cover the quality management system, not the parts themselves. ISO 9001:2026 replaced the 2015 edition in September 2026, so certificates to either edition will be seen during the transition. Outside automotive, a first article inspection report and material certificates usually complete the file.
